The word broken is two-fold. The word brings to mind the emotions related to a hopeless anguish spurred by some kind of inescapable doom. A person's reaction to a situation like this is always one of surrender. The person will surrender to death or they will surrender their agency and ask for outside help. The picture is one person broken by pain and anguish resigned to whatever devastating end may come, and the other is a person broken by pain and anguish with a glimpse of hope, the hope of rescue or another opportunity. This hope of the latter person is the mark of knowledge, the knowledge of another way. The person with no knowledge must resign themselves to the unknown places of death because every alternative of life has been snuffed out.
Me and the guys in Bible study are studying the beattitudes and what it is that Jesus wants us to know about our own souls in order to become close to Him. Jesus says, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." If you are reading, pray for me that I would learn what it means to be poor in spirit and broken before the Lord.

Being broken is a funny thing. In the traditional sense it can be taken as a "broken" spirit, which is something nearly all Christians say they desire but very few actually pursue. It is funny because the very thing you achieve by being broken before God--power--is the element you can't be seeking beforehand, or you fail to achieve it. This is perhaps what makes the truth of God so simple, and yet so incredibly hard to grasp.
