We scarcely talk about the little "g" gods in today's world, whether we are Christians or not. Nearly all of us believe that there is no such thing as a pantheon of gods roaming the universe. Christians, deists, agnostics and other religions alike believe in one god, so the idea of the existence of many gods is a non-issue. However, the understanding of little "g" gods is a little bit misunderstood in time. Actually, many little "g" gods exist in our lives today; just because their existence is false does not negate their existence.
Someone could play a cute decontructivist word game and show that a false god, in name, does not exist. But this is the basic mistake of our time, which is to deny our worship of these false gods. Just think about it for a little bit. My eyes were opened to this through listening to a sermon by Pastor Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. He correlated some of the worship of false gods from the old testament to present day idolatry. Smith said that in ancient times people understood that whatever was their greatest passion was simultaneously their god. If someone worshiped pleasure, then they would have a little idol to molech. Others who loved power would have an idol of astaroth. The point is that these people understood who they worshipped.
If you are trying to reason that your way of looking at the world is superior to these ancients, then stop it. There is no matter about whose paradigm is the best. The matter, the point for you and me, is that we could be worshipping false gods without even realizing it. How many of us worship pleasure(molech) and financial/social capital (astaroth). We need to wake up and repent of our false gods to worship the One true God, Jesus Christ.
